keep “solid” in perspective…from Diamond Matt Warren

 Advocare Business Team,

I totally understand the need for something SOLID

“Solid” = security for our families

“Solid” = a steady income that takes care of the basics (roof, food, etc)

Yes, for a Plan A job and base income, we should strive for SOLID…

The challenge is when someone SETTLES FOR SOLID…

SOLID, in the form of a steady check and benefits, also often mean:

- limits

- trapped

- “golden handcuffs”

- rules

- a pawn in someone else’s chess game

As for a Part Time Plan B, we don’t want SOLID, we want something that’s:

- highly variable and incentive based

- got a HIGH UPSIDE

- a game changer that is life changing if it takes off

When we add the Part Time Plan B (Advocare) to our lives and our Solid Plan A

WE INSTANTLY HAVE:

- no limits

- the key to freedom

- creativity

- hope!

Back in the Plan A “Solid” days, I found I could better appreciate it and give it my best because I knew I WASN’T LIMITED TO MY PLAN A – IT DIDN’T DEFINE ME, BECAUSE I HAD A HOPEFILLED PLAN B TO COMPLIMENT IT.

Just some perspective on SOLID…

Developing Leaders…from Diamond Matt Warren

Advocare Business Team,

“Advocare is about Leadership.  It’s about who you become

while in pursuit of those things you want in life.”

- Advocare Founder Charlie Ragus

Leading people & teams is A LEARNED SKILL…

Here is a eye-opening comparison from John Maxwell’s book,

“The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”…

 Leaders Who

Develop Followers  vs  Develop Leaders

Need to be needed  vs  Want to be succeeded

Focus on weaknesses  vs  Focus on strengths

Develop the bottom 20%  vs  Develop the top 20%

Treat people the same for “fairness”  vs  Treat their leaders as individuals for impact

Hoard power  vs  Give power away

Spend time with others  vs  Invest time in others

Grow by addition  vs  Grow by multiplication

Impact only people they touch personally  vs  Impact people far beyond their own reach

Thanks for joining us in the continued study, practice, & teaching of leadership.

Ideas to get the scale moving…from Diamond Matt Warren

Advocare Nutrition Friend,

Sometimes while on the weight loss journey, the scale stops moving…

Our bodies may be taking a break and we just need to persist…

But sometimes it might be helpful to “mix things up”…

Some Fitness & Nutrition & Advocare Tips to Consider

Fitness:

- There are 3 variables we control: frequency, duration, and intensity

- Frequency: how many times per week are you working out?  Might be time to bump it up to 5 days per week.

- Duration: how long are your workouts?  Might be time to bump the workout from 30 mins to 45 mins.

- Intensity: how focused and intense are your workouts?  Might be time to weave in some interval training, super-sets, CrossFit, etc.

*In my opinion, the 2 most important variables are frequency and intensity; high quality workouts 4-5 days per week is a recipe for success -

can you claim you’re doing that?

Nutrition & Lifestyle:

- Food: might be time for some strict carbo counting – are you staying around or under 100 grams of carbs per day?  The only way to justify more would be if you’re training for competition, trying to gain weight, or accommodating a specific nutritional issue per Dr’s recommendations…

- Water: being hydrated helps your metabolism by around 25%, I make myself have daily “focused chugging sessions” to stay on target

- Binging?  Avoid “episodes” of nutritional disaster… don’t wreck yourself on the weekends and then try to spend all week erasing the damage

- Wine?  Alcohol is a “volumizer”, you’ll retain water and your metabolism will function slower.  You may want to abstain or minimize until your goal is achieved, then it’s about moderation for maintenance.

- Simplicity: keep in mind that food is energy for living, 95% of the time hopefully we’re thinking about food in terms of fuel rather than pleasure.

Advocare Nutritionals:

- Rehydrate: an unsung hero of Advocare – consider using Rehydrate in the afternoon and after dinner to combat false hunger cravings

- ThermoPlus: helps burn additional fat & cals

- Meal Replacement Shakes: for some, this product can have a “volumizing” effect, consider laying off the shakes if that’s you and you’ve plateaued in your weight loss.  Remember, this product is a builder, it is not a “weight loss” product.  For some it’s helpful with initial weight loss in the 24 Day Challenge, but I’d advise experimenting to figure out if it’s meant to be a long term product for you. Every body and metabolism is different.  Maybe you can successfully “cycle” on and off of them?  Experiment and do what works for YOUR body. (Amber has a Meal Replacement Shake every morning.  For me, whole food works best)

- MNS (Metabolic Nutrition System): this is a key nutritional for optimal metabolism

- Cleanse: might be time for a strict cleanse; when I’m looking for a cleanse to make a major impact, I’ll do only fruit until noon each day.

- My morning?  MNS Max3, Catalyst (3), ThermoPlus (2), washed down with Spark & Arginine Extreme combo

If you’re experiencing a lull in your weight loss journey, chances are there are some variables above that will make the difference for you.  It’s up to you to give yourself a brutally honest assessment, then begin the action & experimentation process.  If there is any doubt or question about the above options, run it by

your health care provider.

Indian-Spiced Chicken Pitas

(from Eating Well)

Ingredients

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trimmed
1 1/2 teaspoons garam masala , (see Tip), divided
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1 cup thinly sliced seeded cucumber
3/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro , or mint
2 teaspoons lemon juice
Freshly ground pepper , to taste
4 6-inch whole-wheat pitas, warmed
1 cup shredded romaine lettuce
2 small or 1 large tomato, sliced
1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion

Preparation

Preheat grill to medium-high or position rack in upper third of oven and preheat broiler. If grilling, oil the grill rack (see Tip). If broiling, coat a broiler pan with cooking spray.
Sprinkle chicken with 1 teaspoon garam masala and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place the chicken on the grill rack or prepared pan and cook until no longer pink in the center and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 165°F, 4 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the size of the breast. Transfer the chicken to a clean cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, combine cucumber, yogurt, cilantro (or mint), lemon juice, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon garam masala and 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper in a small bowl. Thinly slice the chicken. Split open the warm pitas and fill with the chicken, yogurt sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion.

Tips & Notes

Make Ahead Tip: Prepare through Step 2. Refrigerate the chicken in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Tips: Garam masala is a blend of spices used in Indian cooking. It is available in the spice section of most supermarkets.
To oil a grill rack, oil a folded paper towel, hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack. (Do not use cooking spray on a hot grill.)

Nutrition

Per serving: 333 calories; 5 g fat ( 1 g sat , 1 g mono ); 64 mg cholesterol; 44 g carbohydrates; 32 g protein; 6 g fiber; 637 mg sodium; 485 mg potassium.

We Need To Lose

We need to lose – by Rick Copley

The year was 1987. The place was a snow covered Franklin Park Golf Course in Boston. On this unseasonably chilly and snowy day the Eastern Massachusetts Class Cross Country meets were held on and around the storied golf course. I remember the dejected feeling as I sat, sweaty and cold in the dirty, slushy snow. On this day my Cross County team didn’t qualify for the state championships for only the 2nd time in the 20+ years that the meets have been held. I felt the deep seeded guilt for being part of this team failure. The hurt went deep. The lesson, however, was ingrained deeper.

I will never forget this day.

I was only a freshman on that day and for that season. I was the 5th man and last scoring position on a team that finished 8th in a race where 4th was required to move on. I learned something that day. I learned to lose and it was the best lesson that I ever learned.

The next Monday a bunch of us got together and went for a run. We ran every day. As the weeks rolled on the group got smaller and smaller until one day, in the dead of winter, I was the only runner to leave Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School’s cleat room to do a 6 mile run. I soldiered on till spring running every single day vowing to apply the lesson I learned months earlier in the snow at Franklin Park. Losing didn’t fit me.

The next year we returned to the Class B meet and finished 4th to qualify for the All-State Meet. At States I was a sophomore and my team claimed 10th and I finished in 106th place. This was better but we still lost to 9 teams. Lessons are meant to be learned. Defeats are meant to sting. I again learned a valuable lesson and pressed on towards a lofty goal of having no team finish higher than my team.

My junior year my team succeeded and we didn’t lose to one single team. Not one.

My senior year we had one of the best teams in the country. We were ranked #2 in the entire nation behind a team in California. We were just a little school from little Cape Cod but yet our team was in the cross hairs of the best in the country. Early in the season we faced the previous years New England Champions on their home turf and lost a dog fight by a few points.

Time to learn lessons from losing again.

Four weeks later we faced the same team from Saint Rafael’s academy of Providence again in their backyard except this time we rolled them. We were peaking and we made them look silly. Lesson learned. At states we won again. Lessons applied.

These lessons from high school sports have stuck with me for my entire life.

In 2005 I raced like a champion at the XTerra Worlds and finished 7th in my age group. The next year I went back and stunk up the place with a flat tire. Which race did I learn the most from? This year I went to Richmond, Virginia in April and had a disastrous race in the Duathlon Nationals. I went back 7 weeks later and had the best race that I’ve had in years at the XTerra Atlantic Cup. I learn. You bet I learn!

You learn more from your loses than you do from your wins.

I work at the YMCA so I support YMCA programs. I do not, however, support the “everybody plays, everybody wins” philosophy. Yes everybody needs to play but youth sports should be about lessons and about improving. If you don’t learn how to lose how are you going to learn how to win? (You know this is true in life and not just sports, right?) Worse yet, if you never experience failure as a youth then how are you going to deal with it as a young adult?

I wish the YMCA’s and schools would stress competing more. This would help the kids that are excelling to excel. It would also help get kids that aren’t meant for sports into art or music or whatever their passions may be. We all carve out our space in life and fill it with light. Why not be happy about the space you carve and the light you fill it with?

I push my son to be his best and enjoy what he’s doing. If he doesn’t want to play soccer or basketball I’m not going to make him. BUT, if he plays he will learn to do his best and learn to win and lose. After all, it doesn’t matter in the who wins or loses it’s who tried there best and learns the lessons for the next games. That, my friends, is the secret of my success.

We Are Building Leaders

Charlie said that “…Advocare is about leadership…” and the Wolfpack Ruby+ leaders are teaming up to grow leaders. All distributors in the Buttar Diamond organization who are Silver or above leaders by 6/5/12 are invited to the John Maxwell Developing The Leader Within You group training. All the relevant details are in Wolfpack Leaders group.

Get the help you need to pin Silver (it’s seriously not very difficult at all) and get it done because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity…
